Keep projects local, export portable archives, or opt in to private Studio Plus cloud backup and restore across devices.

Local first, with backup when you choose it

Every project is edited from the copy on your device. The project holds its manifest, original and generated media, thumbnails, and audio. Finished PDF and MP4 exports are stored locally alongside the project but are shared or saved separately. Drawing, editing, and export continue without a network connection.

A signed-in Studio Plus account can optionally back up projects privately to Firebase. Backup is off until you enable it. It is separate from AI creation: backing up a project does not submit its content to Gemini, OpenAI, or another generative-AI provider.

Two useful safety nets Use cloud backup for convenient recovery and multi-device access. Keep occasional .ddstory exports for a portable copy that does not depend on an account or subscription.

Make a portable backup for free

Open a project, choose Export, and pick Project file (.ddstory). Save it to your files app, a cloud drive, or email it to yourself. To restore, import the file on any device running the app.

This is a complete editable-project archive, not a summary. Pages, text, layouts, source media, audio, and provenance labels come back. Previously rendered PDF and MP4 exports are deliberately excluded; save those separately if you need them.

Whole local projects and Library assets also have recoverable Trash. Deleted pages do not; their media remains in Library so it can be reused.

Back up and restore with Studio Plus

Open Account → Cloud backup & device sync. From there you can:

  • back up one project or all changed projects;
  • opt in to automatic backup after local changes;
  • see the last backup time and storage used;
  • restore a project on another device signed in to the same account;
  • move a cloud project to Trash, restore it, or delete it permanently.

Cloud Trash retains deleted cloud projects for up to 90 days. A limited number of older revisions is retained for recovery. Existing cloud backups remain restorable if Studio Plus expires, while creating or updating a backup requires an active subscription.

When two devices edit the same project

The app does not silently overwrite either copy. It asks you to choose Use cloud or Keep this device. Review both versions before choosing; exporting a .ddstory copy first gives you an additional rollback point.

Local-only remains a supported way to work. Signing in or subscribing does not automatically upload existing projects.
