Create your first project

Build a complete six-page picture book from start to finish, using drawings or photos you already have.

  1. Start a new project

    Go to Projects and tap New project. Choose a template — start with Picture Story if you are not sure. Give it a name you will recognise in six months. “Ella’s dragon book, October” beats “Untitled 3”.

  2. Gather your pictures first

    Open a page and tap its media area. Choose from:

    • Draw now — the sketch canvas
    • Photo or camera — import from your gallery or take a new one
    • Library — anything already in the app

    Attach one piece of media to each page. You can replace it later without removing the old asset from Library.

  3. Put them in order

    In Story Builder, tap Reorder. Drag rows by their handle until the sequence makes sense, then tap Done. Pages renumber automatically.

  4. Write the words

    Tap a page to open the page editor and type into the text field. One or two sentences per page is right for a young reader.

    If you have Studio Plus and would rather start from a draft, use AI page planning while creating the project — then rewrite it.

  5. Choose layouts

    Set a default layout for the book, then override individual pages that need something different. Big picture, Split page, and Caption page are all available per page.

  6. Check the generated cover

    The editable pages are story pages. PDF and video export prepend a simple cover based on the project title and theme, so choose a clear title in Story settings.

  7. Add narration if you want it

    Open a page, tap the sound control, and record yourself reading it. Do this for every page and the exported video becomes a read-along. See narration and music.

  8. Export

    Tap Export. Choose PDF for something to print or read on a tablet, Video for something to send to family, or Project file to back it up. See export guide.

How long this takes

About twenty-five minutes for a six-page book if the pictures already exist. Most of that is writing and rearranging, which is the enjoyable part.

A suggestion about scope

First books get abandoned when they are too ambitious. Six pages, one afternoon, one export. Print it, read it at bedtime, and see whether anyone asks for another one. That tells you far more than a thirty-page epic you never finish.

Things that are easy to miss

  • The trash. Whole projects are recoverable from Projects → Trash. Deleted pages are not; their media remains in Library.
  • Provenance labels. Every picture shows where it came from. Useful when a project has thirty images and you need the original of one.
  • Per-page layout overrides. You do not have to pick one layout for the whole book.
  • Renaming. Open the three-dot menu on a project card and choose Rename.
