Export fails or produces a broken file

Why PDF and video exports fail, and how to fix the storage, backgrounding, and audio issues behind most of them.

Video export stops part-way through

Most likely: the app was backgrounded. Video rendering happens on your device and needs the app in the foreground. Switching apps, locking the screen, or answering a call can stop it. Start the export, put the phone down, and leave it alone until it finishes.

Second most likely: not enough free storage. A ten-page video with narration can need a gigabyte or more of working space, on top of the finished file. Free up space and try again.

Also worth checking: battery saver modes on some Android phones aggressively suspend background work. Turn it off for the duration of the export.

The exported video has no sound

Known platform gap Full audio mixing in video export currently ships on Android only. On other platforms the video exports with the visual track but without mixed narration, page audio, and music. This is a known limitation, not a fault with your project. It is on the roadmap.

On Android, if the sound is missing, check:

  • the page actually has narration attached (open the page and look at the sound control);
  • page video sound is not muted for that page;
  • the story music volume is not at zero;
  • Lower music under narration has not pushed the music down to inaudible on pages that have both.

PDF export produces blank or missing pages

A source file may have become unavailable or an imported archive may be incomplete. Open the project, look for pages without a usable preview, and attach the media again. The current Library delete flow normally removes page links explicitly after warning you.

Export succeeds but the file will not open

Check where it was saved. If you shared it to an app that does not handle the file type, it may have arrived incomplete. Export again and save to Files first, then open it from there.

The export is enormous

Video file size scales mainly with page count and the length of attached page videos. The current exporter does not expose resolution or timing controls. Use fewer video pages, shorten source clips before importing them with another editor, or export a PDF if motion is not needed.

Still stuck

Send us the project as a .ddstory file if you can — see back up and move your projects — along with your device and OS version. A project file lets us reproduce the exact failure.
